The Donation Process

Requirements by blood type

These are some of the requirements donors must meet to be eligible to donate blood based on their donation type.

  • Donation frequency: Every 56 days*
  • You must be in good health and feeling well
  • You must be at least 16 years old in most states
  • You must weigh at least 110 lbs

The Process

The blood donation process is divided into 4 steps:

Register yourself as a blood donor by providing the necessary personal information:

  • Name
  • Contact details
  • Blood type (if known)

Undergo a medical screening to assess your health and ensure blood safety:

  • Answer health-related questions truthfully
  • Get your blood pressure, pulse, and hemoglobin levels checked

Lie comfortably on a donation bed while a qualified phlebotomist collects your blood:

  • A small sample of blood will be taken for testing
  • About 350-450 ml of blood will be collected

Follow these post-donation care tips to ensure a smooth recovery:

  • Keep the donation site clean and dry
  • Drink plenty of fluids and avoid strenuous activities
